Work was carried out at Tavy Consols during two periods, from 1914 to 1920 and again from 1923 to 1924. The information is sourced from Richardson P.H.G.’s book ‘Mines of Dartmoor & the Taymar Valley after 1913’ published in 1991. Located on the western slope of the Tavy Valley opposite Virtuous Lady, the mine features several key shafts. The Whim shaft is situated on the river side of the abandoned railway, while Gills Shaft was obscured by the railway, and West Shaft is positioned further uphill.

Initially operational in the 1840s for copper extraction, the mine yielded approximately 40 tons of ore containing 8% copper. In the 1850s, a valuable tin deposit was uncovered, and by the early 1900s, the focus shifted to arsenic extraction during the reworking phase. Most of the production originated from the upper levels around the Whim Shaft, which descended to a depth of 30 fathoms before extending another 20 fathoms to reach a deep adit with an entrance on the riverbank.

Geological evidence suggests that the mine’s vein is likely an extension of the one found at Bedford Consols on the hillside above Gawton. The presence of anatase within the arsenopyrite vein further supports this hypothesis, indicating a similar pattern of deposition.
