Opencast, measuring 25 meters long and 6 meters wide, is located at SH 7605 0011. It has a later shaft cutting through its floor, along with a connecting adit at its base. The adit itself has another shaft passing through it. A trial level can be found further down the hill to the east at SH 7612 0008. Interestingly, there are no visible spoil tips related to the mine. The site is fenced off, with the opencast slot located at the crest of a small rocky hillock. There is also a similarly fenced off adit to the west-northwest. No significant finds or waste rock are present at the site today, though hammer stones were reported as having been retrieved previously. Some recent rubbish tipping can be found at the east-northeast end of the opencut.
Old shaft was drained by driving a shallow adit in 1856. Some tools found attributed to be Roman.
The workings are located within the Silurian Wenlock-Ludlow series, where one vein runs east to west, intersected by a north to south cross vein containing lead and copper ores. The main copper extraction began as an opencast site known as Ogof Wyddon or the Witches Cave, dating back to earlier mining activities. Documentary evidence also suggests the use of primitive tools at the site, such as those detailed by Pickin in 1988.
In 1856, drainage operations revealed an iron pick, a fish spear, and a stone hammer, the latter still hafted. Additionally, evidence of burnt wood was found at the bottom of the shaft, suggesting that firesetting might have been used for rock breaking.
