Hopeless coal trials in Silurian mudstones. A run-in inclined shaft exists close to the minor road.
Unusually, a non coal bearing coal mine with history:
Year | Activity |
---|---|
1912 | The Presteigne Coal Venture company commences operations at Folly Farm belonging to Aaron Griffiths. Inspired by another coal trial shaft at Cold Harbour in the previous year, and having found some coal (discarded after lime burning??) near some old workings on his land, he calls in the Diamond Boring Company. Drilling proceeds to 85 feet, all of it in unproductive Silurian rock. Despite this, claims are made for the existence of three excellent seams of coal. |
1913 | Based on claims, Radnor Coal Syndicate formed with £10,000 in capital. Inclined shaft started to west of borehole. Some of the directors are spooked by expert opinion by Lancastrian coal expert, but soon replaced by other eager directors. Griffiths dies. |
1914 | Company winds up. |
