East Harptree Lead Works Company was established in 1867 by a consortium of Cornish engineers with the aim of reworking old lead mines and re-smelting slag heaps. However, the venture proved largely unsuccessful, leading to its closure in 1875.
Smitham Chimney, erected in 1867, stands as a reminder of this industrial endeavor. In the early 1970s, the Mendip Society undertook its restoration. Today, it stands as the last remaining old lead-smelting chimney on Mendip. Additionally, the earthworks of the mine buildings, furnace, flues, and reservoirs are still visible.
