With Tye. Part Of Lushington. Wheal Lushington Mine, also known as West Wheal Towan Mine, encompasses several small and ancient mining sites along the coastline stretching from the western side of Porthtowan Beach to the eastern side of Keriack Cove. Although the western section of the mine falls within the parish of Portreath, it is considered part of the Porthtowan mining district. Portreath village itself is located over 2.5 kilometers to the southwest of the western boundary of the mining area, which can be misleading when determining its geographic location.
The mining sites within the Wheal Lushington Mine sett include Wheal Sterran and Wheal Tye, situated on the cliff to the west of Tobban Horse. In 1927, Vivians Shaft was reopened, but despite encountering some fine-grained tin ore, no further development took place. Remnants of old mine buildings, including a square-section stack, and a large waste dump along the cliffside, date from this period of operation.
