Mining activities on the northern side of Scordale, including the notable Mason’s Hole, a large open pit believed to have originated in the 14th century. It’s likely that the reported 70 tonnes of witherite production in 1896 originated from the Murton workings. While yellow fluorite is present in the veins, it doesn’t match the quality found at Hilton. Baryte is found in chisel-shaped crystals alongside calcite and quartz, occasionally accompanied by vivid malachite and azurite staining in certain areas. Witherite, appearing as brown semi-transparent nodules up to 15cm in size, can be found on the ridge above Mason’s Hole.
